BROOKVILLE — More than 100 students from Brookville Area High School were on Main Street early Tuesday morning, painting windows in preparation for upcoming Halloween activities in downtown Brookville.
Temperatures in the low 40s and even some freezing rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of the students painting the windows of local businesses.
Although she was “freezing,” sophomore Willa Jordan said the experience was “really fun.” This was her first year to be part of the window painting. She was working with senior Jessica Greeley, who was painting a window for the second time. “This is a great experience,” Greeley said.
Eight-grader Madison White was enjoying her first experience painting a downtown window. “I was really excited when my painting got picked,” she said.
Freshman Kendra Abell was also painting a window for the first time. “This is a nice way we can decorate and celebrate our town,” she said.
The Halloween contest was started in Brookville in 1957 by high school art teacher Charles Park. During that first contest, also sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 44 merchants participated. Students from grades seven through 12 were involved, competing for cash prizes.
BAHS art teacher Steve Jaworski said this is the 67th year of window painting. “We have 60 windows to paint. There will be two students on most windows, so we should have around 115-120 students taking part. No windows (will be) painted off Main Street, for security reasons,” he said.
Students had to submit their designs and were voted on by all of the teachers, administration and staff of the district. “From the designs that received the most votes we then start assigning windows,” Jaworski said.
“Many of the artists are younger this year, with some of our best designs coming from eighth to tenth graders,” he said.
The windows will be judged by former Art Club officers. Best of show will be selected by the art instructors and the Brookville Chamber is offering a People’s Choice award.
Everyone is encouraged to vote for their favorite painting. Ballots are available at Fox’s Pizza, the YMCA and Brookville Chamber office.
High school Principal Shawn Deemer said, “This a wonderful opportunity for our students to give back to the community and show off their artistic ability. I love walking through the downtown area this time of year, with decorated windows, and the Halloween spirit. I am so glad we have this opportunity to work with our Chamber of Commerce.”
