American Flags On Main Street

November 21, 2024 On Historic Brookville’s Main Street, a proud display of American flags waves as a testament to our nation’s spirit and a tribute to the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This cherished tradition was founded after the 50th anniversary of D-Day by CPL James Slagle, a U.S. Army Ranger with the 2nd Ranger Battalion who stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II. Known as Brookville’s “Flag Man,” CPL Slagle thought there was a lack of patriotism in our town and he dedicated his time and efforts to placing a United States flag on each light pole along Main Street; he was often seen walking Main Street with a giant pole ensuring the flags were perfectly displayed. The bridge on Pickering Street over Redbank Creek is named in his memory. Today, James Slagle’s grandsons, John Barrett, Bill Barrett, and Ben Reynolds along with other members, proudly carry forward this legacy through a non-profit organization, James Slagle Main Street Flag Association. Full of gratitude, the family honors the vision of their grandfather and the sacrifices of veterans past and present, ensuring that this tradition continues as a powerful symbol of freedom and community unity. Each spring, just before Memorial Day, the flags are raised along Brookville’s Main Street, creating a stunning display of red, white, and blue. They remain up through Veterans Day, when they are carefully taken down, laundered, and given out to those making a $5 donation through the Brookville Borough Police Department on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Donations help cover the cost of new flags for spring. The Brookville Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to shine the spotlight on this wonderful organization that works tirelessly to preserve such a meaningful tradition in our town. “The Main Street flags are a source of great pride for our community,” says Executive Director Jamie Popson. “I was amazed to learn about the hard work and dedication of the James Slagle family. Their quiet commitment ensures that Brookville remains a place where patriotism is not just remembered but celebrated. It’s a privilege to share their story.” To help ensure this tradition continues for generations to come, please consider making a donation to the James Slagle Main Street Flag Association:James Slagle Main Street Flag Associationc/o Bill Barrett, Treasurer21 Walnut StreetBrookville, PA 15825 As you walk down Main Street, even without the flags in place for the season, remember the story they tell – one of freedom, honor, and a community united in gratitude.
