Spotting PA’s Elusive White Tail Deer
When and Where
The program is a unique, three-hour guided evening driving tour hosted by Cook Forest State Park. Participants will explore popular white-tailed deer hotspots within the park. The driving tour coincides with the annual whitetail rut (breeding season), which peaks in early to mid-November, making deer far more active during these hours.
- The tour operates via an organized carpool system to minimize the caravan size while cruising park roads. You are highly encouraged to bring your own spotlights.
- Along the way, park leaders provide insights into the natural history, behaviors, and conservation of Pennsylvania’s official state mammal.
Local Spotlighting Regulations to Keep in Mind
If you choose to look for deer on your own before or after the event, keep the following Pennsylvania state rules in mind:
- Recreational spotlighting is strictly limited to the hours between sunset and 11:00 PM.
- It is illegal to cast an artificial light onto any building, farm animal, or photoelectric cell.
- Spotlighting is completely banned during the regularly scheduled statewide firearms deer seasons.
